Writer seems to be in Virginia, climate not like ours, but many useful remarks anyway.
http://tendingmygarden.com/butternut-squash-after-33-years/
Another site said butternut squash is in the cucumber family, now there is a surprise.
Here is the Illinois extension service article, but maybe you found this already, with butternuts in the middle of the article.
http://urbanext.illinois.edu/gardenerscorner/issue_01/fall_04_04.cfm
My original question (to google) was if the squash would ripen after frost. Never got a perfect answer to that one -- hard frost, where you see other effects of hard frost, pick it right away. Those light ephemeral frosts, where it is warm the next day or next hour, you might get more time for full sweetness as this link describes the flavor.
Nor did I find a discussion about putting a cover over the squash in a light frost, as I used to do with my tomatoes, to stretch the season. Have to take the cover off once the sun is shining, and the light frost gone. Fall in the Midwest is not steady as to temperature.

Well done!Sarah Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10674395968982387023noreply@blogger.com
